How are essential oils effective? How do they work for us?
Plants are very complex and though they are not sentient, they have an “intelligence” of their own–and they too, like humans, have to fight for their survival! They have a very elaborate communication system which allows them to survive which to put very simply, is done through the release of chemicals. These chemicals are all created uniquely and with purpose–to protect from predators, to attract pollinators, to create coatings to keep bacteria and fungus away, etc.
So, Oregano for example, is able to use its natural chemicals to repel pathogenic bacteria, viruses and parasites to protect itself. We are able to harness these properties and use them on our bodies. The oil of oregano can be used to help our bodies fight infections from the flu, common cold, candida, and so on.
Think about it…Humans cannot survive without plants, we are dependent on them–they are a source of energy and nutrients that we need for survival, so it only makes sense to use them for therapeutic purposes too! Essential oils are one of nature’s best remedies!
You can dig deep into the science of essential oils by studying their chemistry. Scientists have already done it–it helped them develop synthetic drugs. Every oil has a different chemical makeup. Each oil contains its own chemical compounds and therapeutic constituents that reveal their healing properties or benefits. For example, sesquiterpenes, which are a hydrocarbon, have the following therapeutic qualities: Analgesic, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, antiseptic, sedative, etc. Or, phenol, an oxygenated compound, contains the following qualities: anti-bacterial, antiseptic, disinfectant, stimulant, etc.
There is a plethora of information, research and resources available in books and on the internet. Having some level of knowledge helps provide a better understanding of their potency, and how to use them safely, effectively, and in a variety of applications.
How do we use essential oils?
Aromatherapy is the most common way people use their essential oils. With aromatherapy, the aroma is not only stimulating the brain to trigger a mental, emotional or psychological reaction, but when you breathe it in through your nose, or inhale it into your lungs, the chemicals are supplying therapeutic benefits to your body. For example, diffusing Peppermint will not only boost your energy and promote mental focus, but it also encourages respiratory cleansing, clears nasal passages, and can help relieve allergy symptoms.
The two most popular methods of aromatherapy are diffusing, and direct inhalation (simply breathing in the aroma of the oil). Diffusing oils is very beneficial because it will not only provide that brain stimulation or trigger when you smell the aroma, but you are also receiving the benefits of the oil being evaporated into the surrounding environment. You are not only breathing it in and getting those therapeutic benefits, but in addition, many oils kill airborne pathogens, eradicate mold, or help cleanse and purify the air in some way, so you’re also getting those additional benefits!
Another popular and effective way to use your essential oils is to use them topically! When essential oils are applied topically, they enter the bloodstream and are absorbed into our skin, tissues and organs. Because essential oils are so concentrated and potent, even a drop can go a long way, and it is important to be mindful of skin sensitivity and irritation as well. Diluting essential oils with a carrier oil, such as fractionated coconut oil, is recommended for most topical applications, but not required or necessary with all.
Taking oil internally is another method or way to use your oils, but this method should be used with extreme caution, as some types of oils can be toxic. Always do research and consult your doctor first.
